Jesus Feeds five Thousand

Matthew 14: 13-15-When he heard what had happened [to John the Baptist(that he had been beheaded and was buried)] he withdrew by boat privately to a solitary place. Hearing of this, the crowds followed him on foot from the towns. 14- When Jesus landed and saw a large crowd, he had compassion on them and healed their sick. 15- As evening approach, the disciples came to him and said, “This is a remote place, and it’s already getting late. Send the crows away, so they can go to the villages and buy themselves some food.”

vs- 16- Jesus replied, “They do not need to go away. You give them something to eat.” vs- 17-“We have here only five loaves of bread and two fish,” they answered. 18- Jesus replied, “Bring them to me. 19- And he directed the people to sit down on the grass. Taking the five loaves and the two fish and looking up to heaven, he gave thanks and broke the loaves. Then he gave them to the disciples, and the disciples gave them to the people. 20- They all ate and were satisfied, and the disciples picked up twelve baskets of broken pieces that were left over. 21- The number of those who ate was about five thousand men, besides women and children.

Mark writes, Mark 6:37-But Jesus answered, “You give them something to eat.” Then they said to him, “That would take eight months of a man’s wage’s! Are we to go and spend that much on bread and give it to them to eat?”

*

Luke writes, Luke 9:10- When the apostles returned, they reported to Jesus what they had done. Then he took them with him and they withdrew by themselves to a town called Bethsaida.

Jesus spoke to the people about the Kingdom of God and healed many, according to Luke.

John writes, John 6:1- Some time after this, Jesus crossed to the far shore of the Sea of Galilee(that is, the Sea of Tiberias)

vs- 4- The Jewish Passover Feast was near.

vs 5- When Jesus looked up and saw a great crowd coming toward him, he said to Philip, “Where shall we buy bread for these people to eat?” 6- He asked this only to test, for he already had in mind what he was going to do. 7- Philip answered him, “Eight months wages would not buy enough bread for each one to have a bite!” 8- Another of his disciples, Andrew, Simon Peter’s brother, spoke up, 9- Here is a boy with five small barley loaves and two small fish, but how far will they go among so many?”

10- Jesus said, “Have the people sit down.” There was plenty of grass in that place, and the men sat down, about five thousand of them. 11- Jesus then took the loaves, gave thanks, and distributed to those who were seated as much as they wanted. He did the same with the fish.

12- When they all had enough to eat, he said to his disciples, “Gather the pieces that are left over. Let nothing be wasted.” 13- So they gathered them and filled twelve baskets with the pieces of the five barley loaves left over by those who had eaten. 14- After the people saw the miraculous sign that Jesus did, they began to say, “Surely this is the prophet who is to come into the World.” 15- Jesus, knowing that they intended to come and make him king by force, withdrew again to a mountain by himself.

All three disciples wrote very similar stories. Each added details. I have noted those details only in Mark, Luke, and John to avoid replicating.

Jesus’ feeding of the five thousand is one of only two of His miracles that are found in all four gospels. The other, his greatest miracle, his own resurrection, is the basis of our faith.

These two miracles, being included in all four gospels, boasts of their level of importance. For this article, we will concentrate on the feeding of the five thousand.

John 6:14- After the people saw the miraculous sign that Jesus did, they began to say, “Surely this is the prophet who is to come into the world.” 15- Jesus, knowing that they intended to come and make him king by force, withdrew again to a mountain by himself.

Why the conflict? The people were looking for a great human leader that would be king, like King David. They were not looking for a savior.

The people were looking for the messiah, as the religious leaders described him, as they interpreted how the scriptures prophesied about him. Jesus did not fit into their mold of the messiah. So they rejected him.

Mother Theresa Bread of Life

John 6:35-40- Then Jesus declared, “I am the bread of life. He who comes to me will never go hungry, and he who believes in me will never be thirsty. 36- But as I told you, you have seen me and still you do not believe. 37- All that the Father gives me will come to me, and whoever comes to me, I will never drive away. 38- For I have come down from heaven not to do my will but to do the will of him who sent me. 39- And this is the will of him who sent me, that I shall lose none of all that he has given me, but raise them up at the last day. 40- For my Father’s will is that everyone who looks to the Son and believes in him shall have eternal life, and I will raise him up at the last day.”

Even though Jesus was easily capable of filling five thousand plus, people’s empty stomachs, with only five small barley loaves and two small fish, that was not his purpose. As he said, “I am the bread of life. He who comes to me will never go hungry, and he who believes in me will never be thirsty.” That was his message; not the fact that he could easily feed five thousand people with almost nothing. Jesus offers eternal life.

John 14:6 “I am the way, and the truth, and the life. No one gets to the Father except through the Son.”

Do you have a personal relationship with the Son? With Jesus? If he is calling you to salvation, do not wait.

Today might be the only day that God calls you. Pray this Salvation Prayer to receive the bread of life Jesus is offering. Eternal life in heaven with him and God for all eternity, that is what Jesus offers.

With true repentance, pray this prayer. Lord Jesus, I need you. Thank You for dying on the cross for my sins. I am sorry for all my sins. I open the door of my life and receive You as my Savior and Lord. Thank You for forgiving my sins and giving me eternal life. Take control of the throne of my life. Make me the kind of person You want me to be. Thank you Lord Jesus. A-men.

If you prayed this prayer and really meant it, you are now a child of God. You are born again. Your name is written in the Lamb’s Book of Life. As Jesus said, it can never be blotted out.

The scriptures tell us that when one person repents and comes to Jesus, all heaven celebrates. Right now, all heaven is rejoicing, cheering, applauding for You; Proclaiming Your Name.

I pray that you will grow in the faith, and the love, of our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ,
